Plant-based Products

With Optimized Nutritional Quality

The consumption of plant-based products has firmly entered the mainstream. However, many products still exhibit nutritional gaps. Targeted micronutrient fortification helps address these gaps and improve the nutritional quality of plant-based product concepts.

Closing nutrient gaps in plant-based products

Plant-based foods are primarily chosen for health, sustainability and value-driven reasons. At the same time, the avoidance of animal-derived products can result in insufficient intake of certain micronutrients. Targeted fortification of plant-based products offers the opportunity to close nutritional gaps and develop balanced alternatives across dairy, meat and fish alternative categories.

Micronutrients as a key to fortify plant-based products

Fortifying plant-based products with selected micronutrients helps enhance their nutritional profile and overall functionality. Vitamins B2, B3, B12 and D, as well as the minerals iron, iodine and selenium, are particularly relevant, as they are primarily supplied through animal-derived foods.

Vitamin B12 in focus

Vitamin B12 is considered a particularly critical micronutrient in vegan and plant-based nutrition, as it is found almost exclusively in animal-derived foods and therefore requires targeted supplementation.

Vitamin D and calcium in combination

Vitamin D and calcium are essential for bone and muscle health. In plant-based products, both nutrients are often not present in sufficient amounts and should be deliberately added.

EPA and DHA for brain and nervous System

Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA are mainly found in fatty marine fish. They are typically absent from plant-based products, making targeted fortification a meaningful approach to improving nutritional profiles.

Iron and zinc with limited bioavailability

Iron and zinc from plant-based sources often show lower bioavailability. Targeted fortification of plant-based products can help ensure adequate nutrient supply.
