Mental health and mood are influenced by a number of environmental factors like nutrition, sleep and physical activity. For instance, the supply of the essential amino acid tryptophan is vital because of its role as a precursor for the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin – also known as one of the three happiness hormones and a key element in mood.
In recent years, the gut-brain axis has attracted increasing scientific interest as a bidirectional communication system linking the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. The gut microbiota may influence this communication through several pathways, including microbial metabolites, immune signalling and the metabolism of neurotransmitter precursors such as tryptophan. Although most of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut, peripheral serotonin does not directly cross the blood-brain barrier. Research suggests an association between the gut microbiome and mental health, but the underlying mechanisms and their clinical relevance are still being investigated.
Nutrition may play an important role in this context. For instance, the consumption of prebiotics, which promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, could indirectly support positive mood.
Micronutrients are closely related to mental health
Food can affect mood. And even more, mood influences what we feel like eating. Individuals in a positive mood tend to make healthier food choices as they think about future health benefits. In contrast, individuals with negative feelings focus more on indulgence. They crave comfort foods, often rich in salt or sugar.
Micronutrient supply is another important aspect of mental well-being, as certain vitamins and minerals are involved in key metabolic processes in the brain. Particularly relevant are vitamins D, B1, B2, B6 and B12, folic acid, pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and selenium.
Adequate micronutrient status may contribute to maintaining a balanced mood and emotional well-being. In particular, folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12, vitamin D, zinc and selenium have been associated with mood, highlighting the importance of a sufficient micronutrient supply for mental well-being.

Vitamin D
- Linked to the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin
- High concentrations of vitamin D receptors on neurons in many areas of the brain
Vitamin E
- Protects cell membranes from damage by free radicals
Vitamin B1
- Functions as a coenzyme involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters
- Can mimic action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain
Vitamin B2
- Functions as a coenzyme of proteins acting as co-factors in the metabolism of essential fatty acids in brain lipids
- Has antioxidant properties
Vitamin B3
- Processes and enzymes involved in brain cell function are dependent on niacin-derived nucleotides
Vitamin B6
- Plays a fundamental role in the synthesis of many neurotransmitters
Vitamin B12
- Involved in maintaining the myelin sheaths on nerves for normal nerve conductance
- Involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters
Folic acid
- Functions as a cofactor for enzymes that convert tryptophan into serotonin, and for enzymes that convert tyrosine into norepinephrine/noradrenalin
- Involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters
Pantothenic acid
- Involved in the synthesis of multiple neurotransmitters
- Contributes to the structure and function of brain cells
Calcium
- Important for the release of neurotransmitters, and for several forms of chemical signalling between cells
Magnesium
- Important for the active transport of ions (such as potassium and calcium) across cell membranes, and for cell signalling
Zinc
- In the brain, important in neurons and glial cells
Iron
- Essential cofactor for the production of energy in the brain
- Functions in the enzyme system involved in the production of neurotransmitters
Selenium
- Part of antioxidant enzymes that protect brain cells from the effects of free radicals
Supporting mental well-being in older age
Mental well-being is an important aspect of healthy ageing. With advancing age, changes in lifestyle, health and nutritional needs can influence emotional well-being. At the same time, inadequate micronutrient status is common among older adults, making an adequate nutrient supply particularly important.
Lifestyle and nutritional interventions may help support mental well-being in older age. Studies combining physical activity with supplementation of micronutrients such as B vitamins, vitamins D and E, zinc, calcium and magnesium have reported beneficial effects on mood and mental well-being.
Beyond vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and selected botanicals have also been studied in relation to mood and stress. Ashwagandha, traditionally classified as an adaptogen, has gained particular attention for its potential to support stress resilience and emotional well-being.
